WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — A Capitol Hill institution is in shambles after being ravaged by a four-alarm fire Wednesday evening. Smoke from the massive blaze at Frager’s Hardware store could be seen as far away as neighboring Virginia.
It took more than 200 firefighters roughly three hours to contain the blaze that spread to three neighboring buildings.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries battling the flames.
Eastbound Pennsylvania Avenue between 10th and 11th streets, 11th Street between Pennsylvania Avenue and G Street, and 12th Street between G and E streets are closed to traffic. Authorities suggest motorists use Benning Road, East Capitol Street, Interstate 295, and the 11th Street Bridge as alternate routes.
Police say some closures will remain in effect until the investigation is complete.
The charred remains of the store were still smoldering as the sun rose over the nation’s capital Thursday morning.
Local and federal fire officials are expected to continue investigating the blaze throughout the day Thursday. The investigation could take up to five days to complete.
