Man Charged After Shooting Friend as a Prank

LOTHIAN, Md. — Anne Arundel County police have arrested a man they say used a .40 caliber handgun he thought was a BB gun to shoot a friend in the buttocks as a prank.

It happened about 3:50 a.m. Wednesday in Lothian. Police found a man with a gunshot wound and several other people, all of whom knew one another in a home.

Officers say the victim was asleep in a bedroom when a friend grabbed the handgun and fired one round.

The victim was taken to Prince George’s Hospital Center with injuries that are not life-threatening.

Police say the handgun is legally owned by the homeowner’s son, who was not involved in the shooting.

Twenty-two-year-old Patrick Stapleton of Ashland, Va. is charged with second-degree assault and reckless endangerment.
