ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (CBSDC/AP) — Four adults and five children were injured in a three-vehicle crash involving a school bus in Howard County, police say.
A bus bound for Centennial Lane Elementary School was carrying 55 children when it collided with a van which then struck another car on Centennial Lane around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to police.
Authorities believe the driver of the bus may have turned his head away from the road to address children at the time of the crash.
The driver has been identified as Samuel Stokes Jr., 63, of Baltimore.
Police say four girls between 6 and 10 years old as well as a 7-year-old boy were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Two of the children have since been released.
Stokes, along with two passengers and the driver of the van, were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the passenger car was not injured.
Stokes has been cited for negligent driving and failure to control speed to avoid a collision, according to police.
