Va. Teen Killed in Skateboarding Accident

ARLINGTON, Va. (CBSDC) — An Arlington County teen has died from injuries sustained from a skateboarding accident Tuesday afternoon, police say.

The teen, identified as 18-year-old John Malvar, was skateboarding down South Highland Street near Second Street while hanging onto the driver’s side of a pickup truck at about 12:30 p.m. when he lost balance and fell, suffering a major head injury, police said.

Malvar was in cardiac arrest when medical personnel arrived at the scene but was revived and transported to George Washington University Hospital in critical condition. He later died at the hospital, police said.

Investigators don’t yet know if Malvar hit his head on the roadway or was run over by the truck. He wasn’t wearing a helmet, police said.

The pickup truck was driven by another teenager, 17, who has yet to be identified. Both teens attended both Washington-Lee High School and the Arlington Career Center, an Arlington County schools spokesperson said.

The accident and Malvar’s death are under investigation. Authorities haven’t said if the driver of the truck will face charges in the incident.

Arlington County schools said grief counselors will be available at the schools for as long as they’re needed.
