Cab Driver Shot Dead; Police Exchange Gunfire with Fleeing Suspects
WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — A cab driver, 57-year-old Solomon James Okoroh of Lanham, was shot and killed in an apparent robbery attempt in Adams Morgan early Tuesday morning, police say.
Officers patrolling an area near the 2400 block of Ontario Road noticed Okoroh in distress around 3 a.m. and approached his taxi. As they drew closer they heard a gun shot and saw two men run out of the cab, police chief Cathy Lanier says.
Gun shots were exchanged as police pursued the men. Witnesses say as many as 10 shots were fired. Nobody was injured by the gunfire.
One of the fleeing men attempted to evade capture by kicking in the door of a nearby home. Police took him into custody inside the residence a short time later.
The people inside the home hid underneath the bed following the break-in, police say.
The other man was taken into custody a short time later.
One suspect has been identified by police as 32-year-old Ercell Overton of Northwest D.C. He has been charged with first-degree murder, felony assault on a police officer and burglary. The second suspect is 24-year-old Joshua King of Hyattsville. He has been charged with an unrelated probation violation.
The 1700 block of Kalorama Road and the 2200 and 2300 hundred blocks of Ontario Road are closed due to the investigation.
