ASHBURN, Va. (CBSDC) — It’s been a years-long process, but construction on a stadium that will be home to two professional sports teams in Loudoun County finally got underway Tuesday.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the new 5,500-seat, multisport stadium, which will host the Loudoun Hounds professional baseball team and Virginia Cavalry FC professional soccer team, took place Tuesday morning at the One Loudoun complex at the corner of the Route 7 and Loudoun County Parkway interchange in Ashburn.
The stadium, which was called the BallPark at One Loudoun, sold its naming rights to Fairfax-based Edelman Financial Services, the Washington Business Journal reported Tuesday, and will be called Edelman Financial Field.
Plans for the new stadium were approved by the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors in early April. It’s expected to open in spring 2014.
The stadium was originally approved in 2009 as part of a mixed-use development area called Kincora at the intersection of Routes 7 and 28. But after Kincora officials failed to find funding for road improvements around the development, plans for the stadium were shifted to One Loudoun, which is located a mile west on Route 7.
The Hounds play in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball and the Cavalry play in the North American Soccer League.
