ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele says he is considering running for governor in Maryland.

Steele, who also is a former chairman of the Republican National Committee, told MSNBC host Chuck Todd on Monday that “we’re looking at it,” when asked if he was weighing a run.

Steele noted tax increases in recent years under Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley’s administration. Steele says: “I think we can move the state in a different direction.”

He also says he plans to make a decision by the end of the year.

Steele served as Maryland’s lieutenant governor under Republican Gov. Robert Ehrlich from 2003 to 2007. He was chairman of the RNC from 2009 until 2011. He is a political analyst for MSNBC.
