LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — A 66-year-old Annapolis woman was awarded $800,000 Wednesday when a jury ruled in her favor in a case about bed bugs.
The Capital Gazette reports that Faika Shaaban dealt with an infestation at 1000 West St. in Annapolis for months while landlord Cornelius J. Barrett, of Arnold, ignored her requests for him to look into what could be causing the bumps and lesions on her skin.
A doctor later determined they were due to bedbug bites.
Shaaban’s attorney, Daniel Whitney, told The Gazette that Barrett did not disclose the fact that there was an open code violation for a bedbug infestation when Shaaban signed a lease in September 2011.
Some of the losses Shaaban claims to have suffered because of the bedbugs include merchandise for her business, Annapolis Nautical, and personal belongings that were infested.
