WASHINGTON (CBS DC) — President Barack Obama showed off the “warmth” of an Asian-American Pacific Islander Heritage Month event at the White House last night, touting a lipstick smear on his collar.
While delivering a speech on immigration for Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders, the Hawaiian-born Obama defended himself from blame for the collar kiss, pinning the blame on the aunt of Jessica Sanchez – a contestant on the show “American Idol.”
“I do not want to be in trouble with Michelle,” Obama said in a joking reference to the first lady, “so I’m calling you out.”
The Asian-American Pacific Islander event marks the May heritage month, and also allowed Obama to speak about the White House-backed immigration overhaul that is moving its way through Congress. The bill would overhaul immigration laws, enhance border security and put the estimated 11 million people living in the U.S. illegally on a path to citizenship.
A 2013 Pew Research Center May survey found that 75 percent of U.S. adults believe immigration policy needs at least major changes, with 35 percent saying it needs to be “completely rebuilt.”
Seveny-three percent of Americans say there should be a way for people in the United States illegally to remain in this country if they meet certain requirements.
Among those holding this view, 44 percent say illegal immigrants should be allowed to apply for citizenship, but 25 percent of the public says they should only be allowed to apply for legal residency. A quarter say they should not be allowed to stay legally.
