1 Dead, Deputy Injured in Va. Costco Shooting
STERLING, Va. (CBSDC/AP) — A woman is dead and a Loudoun County Sheriff’s deputy is wounded after a confrontation at a Costco in the 21300 block of Price Cascades Plaza in Sterling.
Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Liz Mills said the shooting occurred about 3 p.m. Wednesday when the deputy responded to a disorderly conduct call at the store. A deputy suffered an injury to the leg in the confrontation and a female Costco employee was killed. She has been identified as Mhai Scott, 38, of Sterling.
Officials tell WNEW’s Cameron Thompson that police were called because Scott was acting in a threatening manner. When deputies arrived, she had a knife in her hand. They felt threatened and used a stun gun on her, but it didn’t subdue her. One of the deputies then fired their weapon at her. Witnesses say they heard five or six shots.
A deputy was taken to a local hospital but has since been released. Scott is dead.
Mills said the shooting scene has now been determined to be safe and secure, and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
