WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican leaders of the House of Representatives are pledging to act to fix the nation’s immigration system but making clear that they will not simply accept legislation passed by the Senate.
Republican House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio and his top lieutenants issued a statement Thursday saying that the House will produce its own legislation aimed at addressing the broken immigration system.
The statement came two days after the Senate Judiciary Committee passed a comprehensive bill with a bipartisan vote to remake immigration laws and put the estimated 11 million people living here illegally on a path to citizenship.
The GOP statement said that there are numerous ways in which the House will approach the issue differently.
