Free Museum Tickets for Military Families

WASHINGTON — More than 2,000 museums across the nation are offering free admission to active-duty military personnel and their families this summer, beginning on Memorial Day.

The Blue Star Museums program was announced Tuesday at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington. The program runs through Labor Day in September. The offer of free admission is extended to military service members, including National Guard and Reserve members, and their families.

The initiative began in 2010 with less than 1,000 museums and has more than doubled in size. This year, it’s adding about 400 museums. It includes art museums, science centers, history museums and children’s museums.

The National Endowment for the Arts created the program with the group Blue Star Families and the Defense Department.
