WASHINGTON (CBSDC/AP) — Metro is launching a new weekly short-trip pass that SmarTrip users can add to their cards to save money.
Starting Monday, SmarTrip users can add the seven-day pass to their cards for $35. A pass is good for trips up to $3.50 during peak hours and unlimited trips during off-peak hours. These passes were previously only available with paper fare cards, which are being discontinued at the end of May.
During peak hours, the short-trip pass can be used for longer trips, but the rider must pay the difference.
Metro says the new pass is a good option for riders who take frequent trips between nearby stations.
Riders can buy the passes online or at machines at any Metrorail station.
