WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – It is very common for college students to drink a lot.
According to a recent study, binge drinkers have impaired heart circulation, some at the level of those who suffer from heart disease.
Binge drinking is described as four or more drinks within two hours for women and five or more drinks within two hours for men.
“Alcohol induces inflammation and oxidative damage that could affect your vascular function,” Shane A. Phillips, PT, PhD, associate professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and author or the study told Prevention.
Researchers compared college students who binge drink six times per month to those who abstained from alcohol.
“Exercise and diet are known to improve vascular function in patients with cardiovascular disease so we might expect this to be possible with binge drinking, Phillips added to the magazine.
The study was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
