LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) – A child was killed Thursday night when the vehicle he was in crashed in Prince George’s County, police said.

A Ford Explorer was traveling southbound on Bladensburg Road in Cottage City just before 8 p.m. when it struck two SUVs that were stopped at a traffic signal, causing it to spin out of control and leave the roadway. The Explorer then struck two utility poles, and came to rest in a nearby parking lot near 37th Place, police said.

The 4-year-old boy, identified as Charles Sullivan, of the 9300 block of Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring, was a passenger in the Explorer and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Explorer and another child passenger were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The occupants of the other vehicles were not injured.

Police said speed may have been a factor in the crash. The accident still is under investigation.
