BALTIMORE — Authorities said a 20-year veteran of the Baltimore Police Department was arrested Tuesday night after he barricaded himself in a west Baltimore home, and a woman who was shot before the standoff died of her wounds.
Spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the officer, James Smith, barricaded himself in the home after releasing his young son Tuesday evening. Guglielmi said negotiators succeeded in persuading Smith to surrender later in the evening. The wounded woman died after she was taken to Shock Trauma. Her name was not immediately released.
“She died as a result of those gunshots,” Guglielmi said.
He said multiple police investigators, including those from homicide, would be interrogating Smith. He said Smith was being treated as a homicide suspect.
The incident began about 3:45 p.m. It was not immediately clear what started it. Guglielmi called it a “domestic situation.”
He says Smith works in the motor unit of the special operations section, and that he has some tactical training.
Neighborhood residents were told to stay inside.
