POTOMAC, Md. (CBSDC/AP) — A heavy duty attempted robbery in Potomac early Tuesday morning included a pickup truck and a backhoe, Montgomery County police said.

Three masked men who police are still searching for were so well-equipped because they were trying to get away with an entire ATM, investigators say.

A surveillance camera from the Bank of America in the 10000 block of Falls Road captured footage of the incident. Investigators told WNEW’s Kevin Patrick they believe the thieves tried to wrap a steel chain around the ATM and remove it using a stolen backhoe. The would-be robbers managed to dislodge the ATM and get it into the bed of the truck before police approached and they fled the scene.

No money was stolen, but the ATM was damaged. The suspects were wearing dark clothing and white gloves.

Police Capt. Paul Starks said smash-and-grab robberies are common, but he called Tuesday’s incident “unique.”

The investigation is ongoing.
