ANNAPOLIS, Md. — A Montgomery County woman says she is planning a petition effort to get Maryland’s gun control bill put to a popular vote.

Sue Payne say she hopes to have a website up so voters can download and sign petitions to get the bill on next year’s ballot.

Payne decided to act after opponents of the bill decided on a court challenge rather than a referendum petition.

Payne will have to submit more than 55,000 signatures to the State Board of Elections by the end of June.

Under the bill, Maryland would require people who buy a handgun to submit fingerprints to state police. The measure also bans 45 types of assault weapons.

Gov. Martin O’Malley is scheduled to sign the gun control bill into law next week.
