ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Leaders in the Maryland General Assembly will appoint a special task force to identify legislative and budgetary measures to address contraband and corruption problems identified at the Baltimore City Detention Center in a federal indictment last week.

House Speaker Michael Busch and Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller made the announcement on Friday.

They also announced a public briefing will take place by corrections officials before leading lawmakers next month.

Both Bush and Miller commended Gary Maynard, who heads the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, for initiating a federal investigation that led to 25 indictments, including 13 correctional officers.

But Busch says it is the responsibility of the Legislature to ask the tough questions about what isn’t working in the state’s prison system.
