WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – Nats GM Mike Rizzo supported Davey Johnson’s decision to bench Danny Espinosa during his weekly radio show Wednesday, saying the second baseman is “in a little bit of a funk right now” and could use a couple days off.
Johnson informed the Junkies he’d be going with Steve Lombardozzi at second base the next couple days.
The Nats are currently at the bottom of the league in both team batting average and on-base percentage a full month into the season, justifying a shakeup.
“I think Lombo has earned the right to get some consistent at-bats over a couple day period,” Rizzo told 106.7 The Fan’s Holden and Danny.
“Danny probably could use a couple of days, if not a physical couple of days off, a mental couple of days off,” he continued. “He’s in a little bit of a funk right now and kind of in between pitches – looking for a fastball getting a curve, sitting on a curve and taking a fastball.”
Rizzo also commented on the health of 3B Ryan Zimmerman, who will ease back into play at Single-A Potomac before rejoining the big club.
“Ryan’s going to play six or seven innings, two or three at-bats today in Potomac, weather permitting of course,” Rizzo said. “And if all goes well, he should be meeting us on Friday in Pittsburgh.”
