LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — A Maryland police officer who was pronounced dead after a car accident in Pasadena Saturday morning may have committed suicide by gunshot before the crash occurred.
Anne Arundel County police say the accident happened around 9 a.m. Saturday on Route 100 near Catherine Avenue. The officer, nine-year veteran of the Bladensburg Police Department Brian Johnson, was off duty at the time but was driving a marked police cruiser.
He was traveling eastbound on Route 100 when his vehicle crossed the median and struck a vehicle traveling westbound. He suffered critical injuries and was transported to Baltimore Washington Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the other vehicle was treated for injuries and released at the scene.
Immediately following the accident, authorities said they believed the officer may have suffered a medical emergency while behind the wheel. They said Monday that the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore ruled the cause of death as a
gunshot wound to the upper body and the manner of death suicide.
