PASADENA, Md. (CBSDC/AP) — A Bladensburg police officer was killed Saturday morning in a crash on Route 100 in Pasadena.
Anne Arundel County police say the accident occurred about 9 a.m. Saturday on Route 100 near Catherine Avenue. The officer was off duty at the time but was driving a marked police cruiser.
Officials say the officer was traveling eastbound on Route 100 when his vehicle crossed the median and struck a vehicle traveling westbound.
The officer suffered critical injuries and was transported to Baltimore Washington Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the other vehicle was treated for injuries and released at the scene.
Authorities believe the officer may have suffered a medical emergency while behind the wheel. Investigators are working with the Medical Examiner’s office to determine the cause of death and resulting accident.
The officer has been identified as Brian Johnson, a nine-year veteran of the Bladensburg Police Department.
