UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (CBSDC) — A once massive mulch pile fire in Upper Marlboro continues to smolder Thursday morning after firefighters worked through the night to battle the blaze.
Flames from the fire, located in the 2000 block of Ritchie-Marlboro Road, shot as high as 80 feet in the air, officials say.
The fire prompted a massive response from first responders with crews from surrounding jurisdictions assisting Prince George’s County firefighters, who began battling the blaze shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday. At one point a hose stretched over a mile through the woods to reach the burning pile.
Persistent wind gusts are making it difficult for firefighters to completely extinguish the fire.
Crews are continuing to douse hot spots with water and will then smother the blaze with dirt to completely extinguish the blaze.
Officials hope to have everything wrapped before 10 a.m.
The cause of the fire is not immediately known, but officials suspect it started naturally.
