WASHINGTON — The head of the D.C. police officers’ union is requesting a review of the District’s emergency dispatch system.

Kris Baumann wrote in a letter to Councilmember Tommy Wells on Thursday that systemic failures, such as inaccurate information being provided by dispatchers to officers, could open the door to a “major breakdown or a tragedy.”

He says dispatchers are routinely too overloaded to be able to help officers immediately and don’t always provide even basic information when requested. Baumann is asking for an oversight hearing to address some of these problems.

Wells is the chairman of the Council’s public safety committee. His chief of staff said Wells had not immediately had a chance to review the letter.
