GAITHERSBURG, Md. (CBSDC) — The man who died after being Tasered by Montgomery County police Friday night has been identified as 51-year-old Anthony Howard.
Officers responded to 8800 block of Cross Country Place in Gaithersburg around 6:10 p.m. Friday after a 911 caller said a man was standing in parked pick-up truck, hitting it with rocks, yelling profanities and crawling on other vehicles. They say he jumped onto the roof of an adjacent SUV when they arrived and began acting in a more aggressive manner. When he ignored orders to get off the car, officers sprayed him with pepper spray.
Police say the spray did little to subdue Howard, who then approached a residence, picked up a child’s scooter and struck it against the front door.
After the man ignored orders to get off the front porch of the home, police say two officers Tasered him.
As he was being handcuffed, authorities say they noticed Howard was not breathing. CPR was administered immediately and the man was taken to nearby Shady Grove Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
As a matter of police protocol, he responding officers were placed on administrative leave.
Police have not determined Howard’s address.
Detectives continue to ask that anyone who witnessed this event and has not spoken to police please call the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5070.
