LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Sister Souljah, the author known as the voice of the hip-hop generation, is finally out with the sequel to her 1999 novel, The Coldest Winter Ever. WNEW’S Judlyne Lilly talked to her about A Deeper Love Inside: The Porsche Santiaga Story.
She says she immediately started writing the sequel to The Coldest Winter Ever as soon as the book came out 14 years ago.
“I’ve been writing consistently since I wrote The Coldest Winter Ever it’s just that I put out two other novels, Midnight: A Gangster Love Story and Midnight and the Meaning of Love before putting out the Porsche story,” she said.
Winter was the 17-year-old narrator of the book named for her, but her sister Porsche is the focus of the new entry in the Santiaga saga. Both are daughters of notorious drug dealer Ricky Santiaga.
Sister Souljah said she’s glad she’s had the opportunity to write African American literature.
“When I was a young girl, I used to go to the NY Public Library, it was my favorite place to go, and I noticed early early on in life that there were very few books about us, African people born in American or anywhere else in the world. And so when I started writing novels, I expected our neighborhood to be very excited about seeing ourselves in books and familiar characters in storytelling.”
