STERLING, Va. — A deceased baby girl was found floating in a pond in a residential neighborhood in Sterling late Sunday morning.
Police say a call from a passerby came in around 11:45 a.m. Officers arrived on the scene, on Awsley Court, and found the child just under the surface of the water. They are still on the scene investigating. The neighborhood is off Algonkian Parkway.
Loudoun County Sheriff Michael L. Chapman tells WNEW’s George Mesthos it is apparent that the child was not born in a hospital. The medical examiner will determine if the baby was stillborn or if it died after birth.
As part of the ongoing investigation, the Sheriff’s Office will work with child protective services and school resource officers to try to determine if there is a young woman living in the area who may require a doctor’s attention. Police encourage the mother to seek medical help.
“It’s frightening and it’s really, really sad,” said Rita Chambers, a neighbor. “Somebody must have been very, very desperate to do that.”
