LA PLATA, Md. — Fire officials say five barns were burned in a two-alarm brush fire in Charles County.
The fire was reported about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the fairgrounds in La Plata. Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department Deputy Chief Jim Duer said nearly 150 firefighters battled the blaze. One firefighter was treated for elevated blood pressure.
Duer said he did not know how many acres burned. He said some domestic animals were lost, but did not know what kind or how many.
He said firefighters from other areas were returning to their firehouses after 7 p.m.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. On Tuesday, the National Weather Service warned that dry conditions and blustery winds could mean an enhanced threat for the spread of wildfires.
