Heiress to WWE Throne Throws Support Behind Gay Marriage
LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Stephanie McMahon, heiress to the World Wrestling Entertainment empire, is joining in the fight for marriage equality.
With Tuesday’s Supreme Court hearings on gay marriage, McMahon, 36, retweeted a Washington Post op-ed calling for the justices to strike down California’s Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriages in the state.
She adds: “People should be free to marry who they love.”
Her mother Linda McMahon, wife of pro wrestling icon and WWE chief Vince McMahon, has twice failed to win election to the U.S. Senate in Connecticut on the Republican ticket. Linda McMahon acknowledged her support of gay and lesbian civil rights during her campaign.
The WWE heiress’ support comes at a time when the Supreme Court is holding its first major hearings on gay marriage in a decade.
Thousands of advocates on both sides of the argument have flocked to Washington as the justices begin hearing arguments on California’s Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage in the state, and a federal law that prohibits legally married gay couples from receiving the same benefits as same-sex couples.
