LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC)— D.C. cabs are getting upgrades, and D.C. cab passengers may be helping to foot the bill.

The Taxicab Commission is on track to approve an increase in the base fare to $3.25, plus a surcharge of 25 cents. That means a minimum of $3.50 per ride. The surcharge for extra passengers is also set to return but instead of $1.50 per person, it would be a flat dollar no matter how many extra people are in the car.

Increased fares, if passed, will help cover the cost of mandatory credit card readers, GPS units and panic buttons for both drivers and passengers. Increases would go into effect June 1.
