Outer Loop of Beltway Near River Road Reopens

LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — All lanes of the Beltway’s Outer Loop have reopened after a serious collision brought all traffic to a standstill before River Road Tuesday morning.

Officials say the accident involving a tractor-trailer occurred between the I-270 spur and River Road shortly before 7 a.m.

Traffic had been diverted onto alternate roadways.

Hazmat crews were called in to assist in cleaning up a 55-gallon drum of pain thinner which spilled in the accident, officials say.

The roadway was closed for more than an hour.

The crash marks the second major closure in the Washington area snarling Tuesday morning’s commute.

Connecticut Avenue in Chevy Chase was completely shut down for hours following a massive water main break Monday night.
