WASHINGTON (CBSDC/AP) — Police say a teenager has been arrested after trying to steal a police officer’s car with the officer’s 9-year-old daughter inside.
Police arrested 19-year-old Demetrice Littles on Saturday. Prince George’s County police say the officer’s wife had just put their 9-year-old daughter in the car outside their home in the 5000 block of Vienna Drive in Clinton at about 8:20 a.m. when she went back in the house. When she came back out, she saw a man attempting to steal the car.
The woman alerted her husband, who is a D.C. police officer, and he confronted the suspect who was in the car. The girl was able to safely exit the vehicle before the suspect drove the car on the lawn in the direction of the officer, who then began shooting at the suspect, according to police.
The car then crashed into another vehicle and the suspect got out of the car and fled on foot.
Littles was arrested Saturday after he sought treatment at a hospital for a gunshot wound. He is charged with first-degree assault, kidnapping, auto theft and other charges.
Court records did not list an attorney for Littles. Court records show he is from Hyattsville.
