LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Kory Lichtensteiger and his agent were prepared for long, drawn out negotiations with the Washington Redskins. As it turns out, things would come together fairly quickly.
The left guard’s agent received an initial offer that was ‘a little disappointing’ on Friday. But, in the span of little more than 24 hours things went from a kick in the gut to a new five-year deal being wrapped up for the 27-year-old.
“It was kind of painful when it all started,” Lichtensteiger told Holder Kushner and Grant Paulsen on 106.7 The Fan. “The whole process started two months ago. They contacted my agent and said ‘We like Kory, we want him back, but we can’t talk specifics.’ ”
Lichtensteiger says he was at a charity event when his agent texted and said he accepted an offer on his behalf.
“We talked about a goal that we wanted to get to,” he explained. “He knew that the offer was a fair number for both parties and he knew I was going to say yes anyway.”
Lichtensteiger says he almost got in a little trouble when he tweeted news of the deal that night before officially signing the contract the following afternoon.
“I really, really wanted the Redskins to come through with something that was fair,” he said. “In no way did I want to leave. I love pretty much everything about this organization from the coaches to my teammates to the training staff.”
