LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Another Laurel playground caught on fire Monday, marking the third time in eight days that a playground in the city has gone up in flames.
Firefighters from the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department said they were called to Emancipation Park at about 4:30 p.m. Monday for a fire at the park’s playground, which is located on 8th and West streets near the Laurel Library.
Firefighters extinguished the fire and nobody was injured, but extensive damage was done to the playground equipment. Officials said fire damage is estimated at $80,000 to $100,000 and the fire is under investigation.
A video uploaded to YouTube by Laurel spokesman Pete Piringer showed the damage of the fire at Emancipation Park:
The Emancipation Park fire is the third playground fire in Laurel this month.
This past weekend, police arrested two juveniles in connection with a fire at Granville Gude Park that was set on Friday night.
On March 3, firefighters put out a fire at the Discovery Community Park playground that caused $100,000 in damage.
Piringer said Laurel police and Prince George’s County fire officials believe that fire was intentionally set. Officials have not said if they believe the Emancipation Park fire is connected to the other fires.
