WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — Nene will play the first true home game of his NBA career next October when the Washington Wizards face the Chicago Bulls in a preseason tilt in Brazil.

The game, which is part of the league’s Global Games initiative, will be played in Rio de Janeiro on Oct. 12. The contest holds the distinction of being the first-ever NBA game played in the country.

Nene, a Brazilian native, was born in Sao Carlos and now devotes time to helping provide educational and athletic opportunities for underprivileged children in the country.

This is not the Wizards first taste of international basketball. The team has previously played exhibition contests in the Bahamas, Canada, Germany, Mexico, and Spain.

Like the NFL, the NBA is not limiting international contests to the preseason. Three regular season games have been played outside of the United States.

The NBA says a total of 138 games have been played in 18 countries throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas since 1978.
