FORESTVILLE, Md. (CBSDC) — An armed resident shot a man trying to force his way into an apartment in Forestville Thursday night, police say.

The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. at an apartment building in the 3300 block of Walters Lane, according to authorities.

The resident says a man was banging loudly on his door and when he opened it the unruly man tried to force his way inside. Fearful, the resident shot the man who then tried to flee to another apartment.

Police say they found the man a short time later and took him the hospital where his condition is currently unknown.

A woman who lives in the complex says heavy drug use in the area may have played a role in the bizarre incident.

“There’s a lot of PCP usage around here,” she said. “It’s surprising to see a lot of young kids and some of the old people, too… a lot of drug use.”

The woman says she keeps a firearm in her apartment for safety, but doesn’t believe the complex is altogether perilous and was caught off-guard by the shooting.

“It actually does surprise me,” she said. “I never took this area to be high in burglary because there is so many people. You would have to think you’d have to be pretty brazen… Anybody could pretty much see if you were trying to break in somebody’s house.”

Thursday’s incident marks the third time withing a month that a would-be intruder has been shot while attempting to break into a home in Prince George’s County.
