LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC)- A 17-year-old is dead after his car struck a tree Thursday morning in Manassas.

Michael Murphy Schmelzinger was a student at Osbourn Park High School.

Police say Schmelzinger, the only occupant, was driving a 2008 Ford Mustang southbound on Lake Jackson Drive when the vehicle left the roadway and hit a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to an investigation, speed was a factor in this crash.
