WHEATON, Md. (CBSDC) — A woman is dead and police are looking for the driver responsible for a fatal hit and run that occurred Tuesday night in Wheaton.

Marlyn Eres Ali, 53, was crossing Connecticut Avenue at Everton Street when she was struck by a car around 8:15 p.m., police say. The driver of the vehicle fled the area.

Ali was laying in a 5-foot wide grassy median beside the road when police arrived. She was taken Suburban Hospital and later succumbed to her injuries.

Ali was just a few blocks from her home on the 3800 block of Elby Street when she was hit, police say.

Drivers routinely travel well above the posted 45 mph speed limit on that stretch of Connecticut Avenue, but it’s unclear whether speed is a factor in the fatal collision.

Authorities believe the collision caused front-end damage to the car, but are not releasing any additional information about the vehicle.
