WASHINGTON (CBSDC) - Metropolitan Police say a man who escaped a house fire that killed a 4-year-old girl has been charged with killing the child.
Forty-six-year-old Jerome Calvary Lewis was arrested Friday and charged with second-degree murder in the death of Samauri Jenkins.
Jenkins died Tuesday at a hospital, where she was taken after Sunday’s fire. Several other people, including Lewis, escaped the blaze.
Police say an autopsy found that the child died from injuries sustained in the fire. On Friday, her death was ruled a homicide.
The cause and origin of the fire are still being investigated.
