LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC)- A D.C. man who attempted to declaw two kittens last May by ripping the claws from their feet himself has been sentenced to jail time, the Washington Humane Society tells WUSA-9.

Eric Felipe Gaskin was arrested in September on two counts of felony animal cruelty and pled guilty to two misdemeanor charges of cruelty to animals in November.

The Washington Humane Society reports that a judge sentenced him to to 180 days in jail, three years of probation, 40 hours of community service, a $200 fine to The Victim of Violent Crimes Fund, a mental health assessment and a parenting skills group. He was also ordered not to own any pets for the length of his probation.

The kittens, who belonged to Gaskin’s daughter, were named Simba and Pumba. The WUSA-9 report says that most of the bones in each of their feet were crushed. Their paws became infected, which led to them becoming paralyzed. They were later euthanized.
