WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – Robert Griffin III and the Washington Redskins earned another win over the Dallas Cowboys – and this one will last a lifetime.
Much more was on the line when the Redskins beat the Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day than just seeding in the NFC East. Marissa Pena, a Cowboys fan, and her boyfriend, Emanuel Vega, a Redskins fan, decided to name their unborn son after a player on whatever team won the Thanksgiving Day showdown. With the Redskins winning 38-31, the couple’s child will be named Robert Griffin Vega after the Redskins quarterback.
“I thought that was cool, our first official relationship game on Thanksgiving of all days,” Vega told the Washington Post. “She thought it was cool too, so we needed some kind of bet. She said the loser would wear the jersey of the other team on the last game of the season at a Redskins bar. That would be horrible for me. That would be horrible.”
Before the game, the couple decided that if the Redskins won, their son would be named after RGIII. If the Cowboys had won, then the unborn son would have been named after Cowboys wide receiver Miles Austin. The baby’s due date is April 16.
The game would prove to be meaningful not just for the couple, but for the Redskins’ playoff hopes. RGIII and the Redskins would go on to beat Dallas on the last day of the season to clinch the NFC East.
“We’ve had bets before, where she would wear my Redskins sweater at work if they won,” Vega said. “But the name of our son? Determining what fan he would be? It was just insane that they won. That was even bigger than the division title.”
