GERMANTOWN, Md. (CBSDC/AP)— The Maryland medical examiner’s office has found that a 29-year-old woman died of natural causes after beginning an abortion procedure at a Germantown clinic.
The office told The Washington Post that the woman suffered a rare complication related to childbirth in which amniotic fluid was pushed into her bloodstream. She died at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Feb. 7.
The medical examiner listed two other causes of death — a complication involving blood clots as well as “fetal abnormalities.”
A spokesman for the office says it will take weeks to complete a more detailed autopsy report.
Capt. Paul Starks, a Montgomery County police spokesman, says police are awaiting those findings, and the investigation into the woman’s death remains active.
The clinic where the woman was treated has been the subject of frequent protests by abortion opponents.
