MCLEAN, Va. (CBSDC) — With gas prices soaring and people looking for any way to save money, grocery stores are offering some relief at the pump.

Giant Food has been running its gas rewards promotion with Shell since 2010 and Safeway recently partnered with ExxonMobil for a similar deal.

The deals are designed to reward loyal customers who shop consistently at the grocer with savings per gallon when they fill up their car. The more the person spends at the store, the more money they can save per gallon.

The deals are attractive to people who spend a lot of money on groceries and also fill up their cars fairly often.

Two women, both moms who use Giant’s gas reward program, cashed in their rewards points Wednesday at the Shell gas station on Chain Bridge Road in McLean. One woman saved 40 cents per gallon, trimming the $3.89 per gallon price to a more tolerable $3.49. Another woman had even more rewards points to use, saving 60 cents per gallon.

Both Giant and Safeway offer 10 cents off a gallon of gas for every $100 spent at their store. Savings increase incrementally for every $100 spent, with Giant offering savings up to $2.20 per gallon while Safeway caps the savings at $1 per gallon.

The rewards points typically are valid for 30 days after they are earned.

Both Shell and ExxonMobil have numerous participating gas stations throughout Maryland, Virginia and the District.
