MANASSAS, Va. (CBSDC) — Firefighters escaped injury as a roof collapsed near them while battling a two-alarm fire at an apartment complex in Manassas.
The fire began in a third floor apartment in the 11200 block of Lady Jane Loop shortly before 11 p.m. Monday, authorities say.
Firefighters say they requested a second alarm as the fire began spreading to the roof. While battling the flames from inside the apartment a portion of the roof collapsed, causing a few of them to become disoriented and issue a call for help.
It took just 10 minutes from the time the first call to 9-1-1 was placed until the roof collapsed, WNEW’s Kevin Patrick reports.
Officials say the firefighters were not injured in the collapse, though two have been taken to a nearby medical facility for observation.
A resident of the apartment complex is hospitalized with symptoms of smoke inhalation.
The Red Cross is assisting the 60 residents displaced by the fire. Damage to the apartment complex is estimated to be roughly $300,000.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
