DC Jewish Community Center Hosts Symposium on Race
WASHINGTON — The D.C. Jewish Community Center is hosting a weekend symposium on race and identity in America, including Theater J’s production of the play “Race.”
The series of events runs through Saturday and Sunday. It includes panel discussions, performances of the play and a screening of the film “White: A Memoir in Color.”
In the play, “Race” by David Mamet, two male lawyers are called to defend a wealthy white client who is charged with raping a black woman.
Carole Zawatsky, chief executive of the Jewish Community Center, says the re-election of the first black president presents an opportunity to talk about claims that America has entered a “post-racial world.”
Panel discussions will include Washington’s changing demographics and the work to establish a black history museum on the National Mall.
