LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Traffic is returning to normal after icy conditions wreaked havoc on drivers who battled treacherous roadways and multiple closures during Thursday morning’s commute.

In Virginia, the Arlington Memorial Bridge and Fairfax County Parkway have reopened after multiple accidents forced authorities to close all lanes until salt trucks were able to treat surfaces.

In Maryland, Rockville Pike has reopened after it was closed for hours between Gosvenor Lane and the Beltway due to the slippery conditions. The ramp from southbound I-270 to Rockville Pike was also affected.

A mix of rain and wet snow fell across the region last night. The snow accumulated on grassy surfaces, but did not stick to streets. The damp conditions led to the formation of black ice to form on the roadways.

Drivers are being asked to exercise extreme caution behind the wheel this morning.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve throughout the morning as temperatures rise.
