ALEXANDRIA, Va. (CBSDC)- The Wednesday evening death of a 94-year-old Alexandria man, who police have identified as Elmer Roehrs, is now being labeled a homicide.
Police have also arrested a suspect in a burglary that occurred at the man’s Holly Street address in November. Although she has not been charged in relation to the suspicious death investigation, 45-year-old Marie Maybell Johnson is being held without bond at the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center.
Johnson was arrested around 3:15 a.m. Thursday following a traffic stop on Duke Street. She has been charged with burglary and grand larceny from the November incident.
A family member discovered the elderly man when they arrived at the home, on the 2700 block of Holly Street, around 7 p.m., police say. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene a short time later.
The man suffered trauma to his upper body, police tell WUSA-9.
Roehrs’ death is the first homicide in the city since 2011.
An unspecified resident had complained to the city council the home was burglarized on multiple occasions, WNEW’s George Mesthos reports.
The house is also right around corner from the residence where Nancy Dunning, the wife of the Alexandria sheriff at the time, was killed nine years earlier.
The investigation is ongoing.
