WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama made his intentions for comprehensive immigration reform loud and clear: Let’s get it done.
During the first State of the Union address of his second term as president, President Obama emphasized the need for Congress to push through immigration reform.
“The time has come to pass comprehensive immigration reform,” Obama said on Tuesday night. “Now’s the time to get it done. Now’s the time to get it done.”
Obama said that during his four years in office, his administration has put “more boots on the Southern border than any time in history” and has reduced illegal entry into the U.S. to its lowest numbers in 40 years. The president urged for reform that included background checks, taxation and the emphasis to learn the English language.
“We know what needs to be done,” President Obama said. “Send me a comprehensive immigration reform bill in the next few months and I will sign it right away. And America will be better for it. Let’s get it done. Let’s get it done.”
