Frederick Co. Parents Hope to Save 9th Grade Sports

LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC)– In a money-saving effort, the Frederick County Board of Education is proposing that the school system cut some 9th grade sports programs.

One parent, Martin Engel, has four children in the county’s public schools and has started a petition to keep sports off the chopping block. More than 600 people have signed it.

The board will meet Wednesday to discuss the proposed budget, which has to be handed in to the Board of County Commissioners by March 1.

“This isn’t a choice we necessarily wanted to make,” Superintendent Terry Alban said. “We were faced with a lot of difficult choices. We appreciate the feedback from the public and I’m sure that our board will be looking for alternatives and options as they figure out to make all of those numbers balance at the end.”
