WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — One home is destroyed and another is damaged following a huge early morning fire in Northeast Washington.

Firefighters were called to the 5800 block of Field Place NE around 4 a.m. Monday for a reported blaze completely engulfing a vacant home.

The fire is believed to be fueled by a broken gas line in the rear of the home.

Due to the heavy flames, firefighters were forced to battle the blaze from outside the home, an official says. The fire would eventually cause the rear of the residence to collapse.

As flames spread to a neighboring home, firefighters banged on the door to alert the occupants, officials say.

It took more than two hours and 60 firefighters to bring the blaze under control. Fire officials say no one was injured in the fire.

A man arrested for murder once lived in the vacant home, police say.
